How do you Japanese counters with the noun you are talking about?

Question by tomu.: How do you Japanese counters with the noun you are talking about?
For example, let’s say “3 pencils”

I know pencil is 鉛筆
I know the counter is 本 so 三本 is 3 in this case

How do I put these together? Is it 三本の鉛筆
BTW is 三本 pronounced sambon because the ん is before ぼ in さんぼん

Thanks
